Port Arthur in Tasmania, Australia was not just one of the destinations for convicts shipped from the British Isles in the early 1800s. It was where they sent the worst offenders and re-offenders, and often their families too. Conditions were harsh.  Food was a privilege, and speaking out loud not encouraged. Many prisoners are in unmarked mass graves on an adjoining small island. Known as “The Isle of the Dead”, it contains the remains of around 1600 people. Visitors to the site speak seeing or hearing upset children, and a lady in blue.
