16. The Island of the Dolls, Mexico City
Isla de las Munecas or the Island of the Dolls is a disturbing floating garden. Hundreds of dolls hang from the trees. You’ll find it in the canal system around Lake Xochimilco near Mexico City. The story goes the previous caretaker of the island found a child drowned in the surrounding canal water. He then hung her doll from a tree. Over the next 50 years, he hung more and more dolls in the trees to try to please her, thinking the girl was haunting him.
